Off-court
This right-handed player started tennis at the age of five and was soon labelled
a huge talent. He is now coached by Jaroslav Navratil and his stronger points
are his forehand and his service. Off court Tomas Berdych enjoys watching a movie
or listening to music and he just has to bring his laptop with him. He's also
a big ice hockey fan. Tomas's girlfriend is Czech tennis player Lucie Safarova.
On-court
In 2004 Tomas won his first ATP title by beating Filippo Volandri 6-3 6-3 to win
in Palermo. But that wasn't all, in Athens he reached the quarter finals of the
Olympic Games by beating, amongst others, the no. 1 in the world Roger Federer.
At the US Open he reached the fourth round before being beaten by Tommy Haas.
In 2005 he won his first Masters Series Event in Paris, where he beat five seeded
players including Ivan Ljubicic in the final, who he beat by 6-3 6-4 3-6 4-6 6-4.
He also reached the final of the Synsam Swedish Open where he lost to Rafael Nadal.
Other great results include the quarter final of the men's double tournament
at the Australian Open together with Andrei Pavel of Romania and the third
round of Wimbledon.
